| Black Flag is an American hardcore punk band formed in 1976 in Hermosa Beach, California by guitarist and primary songwriter Greg Ginn, who remains the band’s only continuous member. Originally called Panic, the group quickly became one of the earliest and most seminal acts in the emerging hardcore punk movement in the United States. Emerging from the Southern California punk scene’s raw energy, Black Flag forged a distinctive sound that blended speed, aggression, and abrasive intensity, helping to define hardcore with faster tempos and ferocious performance attitudes that sharply contrasted the original punk of the 1970s. Their relentless DIY ethic — from self-booked tours to releasing music through Ginn’s own SST Records — became a blueprint for countless underground artists and independent labels. | |
